Gines becomes first Olympic gold medallist in sport climbing

Alberto Gines of Spain took the first ever Olympic gold in sport climbing on Thursday after the 18-year-old won the men’s competition after holding on following a strong start. American Nathaniel Coleman took silver and Austria’s Jakob Schubert bronze. Gines led after the opening speed section, touching the buzzer up the 15-metre wall after 6.42 seconds to edge out Japan’s Tomoa Narasaki.
