Alberto Gines of Spain took the first ever Olympic gold in sport climbing on Thursday after the 18-year-old won the men’s competition after holding on following a strong start. American Nathaniel Coleman took silver and Austria’s Jakob Schubert bronze. Gines led after the opening speed section, touching the buzzer up the 15-metre wall after 6.42 seconds to edge out Japan’s Tomoa Narasaki. France’s Bassa Mawem had topped speed qualifying two days earlier but an arm injury ruled him out of the final.
